New Artistic Director For HIFA

Gavin Peter has been appointed as the new artistic director for the flagship Harare International Festival of the Arts.

He replaces founder Manuel Bagorro who stepped down at the end of this year’s edition.

Peter is a well-traveled performer having been part of the legendary theatre company Over The Edge which included stars like Chipo Chung, Lucian Msamati, Kevin Hanssen, Zane E. Lucas, Adam Neill, Craig Peter, Karin Alexander and Sarah Norman. He is also Chairman of the Allied Arts Festival in Zimbabwe, a large performing arts festival for school students.

He is also known for his role as the vibrant MC on the main stage at HIFA.

Peter will be tasked with re-energesing a brand that has suffered for different reasons over the last couple of years with accusations of disenfranchisement by some members of the arts sector. He will certainly have a lot on his plate with some people also feeling part of the essence of art has been sacrificed for commercial purposes.

Next year’s HIFA will take place between 30 April an 5 May 2013. Applications for artists will be invited next month.
