A bombshell dropped on Monday when the Irish government introduced visas for nationals from Botswana and South Africa.

Ireland’s Minister for Justice Helen McEntee announced the decision, which comes into effect on Wednesday.

Her department lamented the number of International Protection applicants received from both countries in recent timescently, even though both are designated safe countries of origin.

McEntee said the decision was considered carefully.

Ireland will now have a dedicated visa desk for South Africa in Dublin.

Three Visa Application Centres will be established in the southern African country and operated via VFS Global.
