Oscar Pistorious, the double amputee from South Africa has been selected to compete at the upcoming Olympics for his country in the 400m individual and relay races.
Pistorious has spent most of his life without both of his lower legs. In what is a milestone for disabled people Pistorious will now be able to compete against his able-bodied opponents at this year’s London Olympics. He becomes the first amputee to run at the games.
His selection for the relay team was always likely but it was his inclusion in the list for individual competition that came as a surprise. He was included despite him just missing out on the country’s strict qualifying criteria.
He is South Africa’s only entrant in the 400m race.
A real triumph for the human and Olympic spirit.
