Zimbabwe fell 2-0 to a dogged defensive performance to Lesotho in a Fifa World Cup 2026 Qualifier match at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg on Friday afternoon.

The Warriors made most of the attacking play but conceded two goals, both against the run of play in the first half.

Rethabile Rasethuntsa, kneed one in from a corner after Donovan Bernard flapped at it.

Jane Thabantso made it 2-0 and set up what eventually became their first win in a Fifa World Cup Qualifier in 10 years.

Debutant Tawanda Chirewa hit the bar in the first half. Tymon Machope’s overhead kick crashed the overhead on the other end in the second.

There was a lot of huffing. There was a lot of puffing. But the Lesotho house stood resolute.

An ugly scene reared its head for a mere moment in the second minute.

Machope appeared to have been brought down by the keeper in the box. The referee did not give a penalty.

Fans through some missiles. Captain Marshall Munetsi calmed them down.

For Jairos Tapera, questions will be asked about his midfield. which seemed a little light on the defensive end.

Lesotho had opportunities to extend the lead, twice players going through on goal and failing.

In the end the Lesotho just looked more of a battle-ready side than the Zimbabweans.

It will be Tuesday for the next lesson when Zimbabwe face a stronger South Africa side.
