Mother jailed for hitting own 11-year-old child with brick

A mother has appeared before the Mutare Magistrate’s court, facing physical abuse charges.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says Debra Masese(33) physically assaulted her 11-year-old biological daughter, Makanaka,with a half brick on the right side of the head.

The facts of the case

“The accused person went to town leaving the complainant with her brother”, the NPA said. “Upon
coming back the accused person found out that the complainant had not washed the plates and this enraged the accused person resulting in her hitting the complainant with the brick”.

Makanaka complainant fell down and became unconscious and the accused person went with
her to the clinic for treatment. The matter came to light after a tip off was made that the accused person had hit the complainant. The complainant was interviewed and she revealed the truth.

The sentence

The accused person was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment. Eight months were suspended and she will serve 16 months effective.
