Wolverhampton Wanderers have handed a full English Premier League debut to Zimbabwean youngster Tawanda Chirewa.

And his first full foray into the league did not come much bigger than in the losing cause against title-chasing Arsenal at Molineux.

Gary O’neill has spoken glowingly about Chirewa, and chose this match to throw him in the deep end,. A full 75 minutes he got.

It was in a losing cause. Arsenal won 2-0 thanks to goals from Leandro Trossard and their captain Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal invincible Martin Keown, in the after match show on Premier League TV, was impressed by Chirewa’s performance.

And so was O’Neill who called it ‘Tawanda’s incredible full debut’.

Chirewa was called up for the recent Zimbabwe matches but withdrew because he wanted to fight for a first team place at Wolves.

The 20-year-old says he is fully committed to turning out in the famous green and gold of the Warriors.
