Key players we’d like in Zimbabwe Men’s Cricket squad for 2023 African Games

The African Games start in about two weeks and Zimbabwe have a slot in the cricket section of the tournament, as the sport makes its bow.

From what we understand, Zimbabwe will not send a full squad to the tournament which also serves as a qualifier for the re-entry of the tournament at the Olympics in 2028.

And so we have a couple of players we think are a no-brainer to send in the squad coached by Steve Mangongo.

First of all, Tony Munyonga, who captained the side in their match against Uganda a few months ago, must be in.

Of the players who were involved then, retain Brian Bennett, Johnathan Campbell, Milton Shumba and Tinotenda Maposa.

And to steady the batting, throw Nick Welch in there mate. He has not been great at Logan Cup but we think he can do a job in white ball.

Add Clive Madande in the mix to keep the spine working. Also throw in Owen Muzondo and the big-hitting Tashinga Makoni as well Tashinga Musekiwa.

Would there be a temptation to throw in Matthew Campbell? Not sure but if you can you might. It would be unfair on the other players because he has not played domestic cricket this season.

But Prosper Mugeri has done pretty much nothing to upset anyone, so throw him in there.

But you have Newman Nyamhuri who impressed at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, as well as Ryan Kamwemba.

A player who has caught our attention is the prodigious 15-year-old Malachi Harry. He is already on tour with a Select side in South Africa. A wild-card perhaps. Get in!

Of course, if he was available, Wessly Madhevere would be a no-brainer.

We are just speculating here.

Share below or on our socials who you think has a claim to a spot in the Under-25 side.

PS. Zimbabwe are in the same group as Namibia, Nigeria and Tanzania.

The other one has South Africa. Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya.

The top two sides make a semi-final for a spot in the final.
