Musona scores wondergoal in Nigeria draw

Walter Musona scored one of the best ever freekicks to come out of Zimbabwe in his side’s 1-1 draw in a 2026 Fifa World Cup Qualifier Group C match against Nigeria on Sunday.

His Cristiano Ronaldo-esque free-kick from distance left Francis Uzoho in the Super Eagles goal stranded as the ball bulged the net with dramtic emphasis.

It was a goal which reduced him to tears as he celebrated it.

Zimbabwe dominated the first half for large periods, with their keeper Donavan Bernard largely a spectator for long periods.

It was a different game in the second half, after Nigeria introduced, among others, Kelechi Ihenacho, who was a lot more of a handful for the Zimbabwe defence.

Bernard almost cost his side a goal when he conceded an indirect free kick inside the box, after a ball he received touched his hands, got onto the ground and then after he kicked it about for a bit, he picked it up. The resulting free kick was cleared of the line.

Nigeria were rewarded in the 67th minute, when Ihenacho was left unmarked in the box and his effort rolled into the far corner.

Both sides created chances but the match ended as expected.

For Zimbabwe coach Baltemar Brito, he may have seen this as an opportunity missed. But if most of the Warriors faithful had been offered a 1-1 against Nigeria when the draw was made, they would have gladly taken it.
