Five men have arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for impersonating its officers.

Tinashe Mhere, Peter Maodzeka, Nyasha Ndumo, Luckmore Makwara and Raymond Banda were picked up according to the commission which itself effected the arrest.

Another man, David Nyasuka, is still at large.

ZACC said Nyasuka, in the company of Mhere, approached the informer Tawanda Dekwende a car salesman purporting to be selling a motor vehicle.

“Dekwende requested for their National I.Ds to enable him to draft an agreement of sale. The two are alleged to have produced fake ZACC I.Ds as proof of identity,” reported ZACC.

Dekwende insisted they produce their IDs, upon which they said they left to collect them.

The informer then called ZACC to verify their identity, and upon confirmation of their being imposters, they were arrested on return.

After investigations other accomplices were found including members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

“Further investigations revealed that the two accused persons were working in cahoots with the remaining accused persons who have been identified as serving members of ZRP,” ZACC wrote.

“The five accused persons have since appeared before the courts and were remanded in custody to 29 September 2023 for bail hearing.”

In terms of section 179(1)(b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23] a person who is convicted of impersonation is liable to a fine not exceeding level six or imprisonment or a period not exceeding one year or both.
