Ian Makone elected Harare Mayor

Veteran opposition politician Ian Makone is the new mayor of Harare, after an election held on Monday.

He takes over from Jacob Mafume, after it was believed CCC leader Nelson Chamisa has preferred Makone instead.

Makone has a strong history in opposition politics, having served as chief advisor to the late MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and also chief secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office during the Government of National Unity.

He was elected as councilor for Ward 18 in the recent elections.

Kudzai Kadzombe will serve as his deputy. She is councilor for Ward 41.
