Zimbabwe Cricket gets land to build stadium in Victoria Falls

Zimbabwe Cricket has gotten land to build a stadium in the resort town of Victoria Falls.

This was revealed by Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman Tavengwa Mukhuhlani after his re-election, while speaking to the media.

He spoke about it as he said that his organisation’s focus was decentralisation of the game.

“The focus of Zimbabwe Cricket is to decentralise cricket, number one. Number two, to make cricket available and accessible to the fans,” Mukhuhlani said.

“We don’t want a Midlander fan to travel to Harare to watch a player from Midlands. We want them to watch their player in their background. It stimulates interest and helps to grow the game.”

Mukhuhlani was responding to a question in which he had been asked about seeing more international cricket in places like Mutare and Kwekwe

“We want every province in this country to be able to have a flavour of cricket, ” he responded. “In Mutare we have sent the West Indies before to go and practice. Kwekwe we have done the same.”

There were was a major constraint in developing facilities in those cities.

“We want to develop these facilities to proper international standards, but we don’t own them. They are run by committees for the sports clubs,” Mukhuhlani continued. “In Kwekwe, our challenge is that they want to give us three-year lease, so we can’t invest on a three year lease. We have the same problem in in Mutare… There are concerns we can’t circumvent because of the ownership of the club.”

He lauded the Victoria Falls Town Council for its support

“That is why we are gong to Vic Falls, because we have somehow found favour with the Victoria Falls Town Council. They have given us a piece of land, which we think is ideal to develop a stadium.”

Mukhulani was re-elected unopposed for a third term at the helm of Zimbabwe Cricket.

Zimbabwe Cricket has had land in Victoria Falls before, but had to give it up to settled legacy debts.

This article was updated to indicate that the land they got is not the same as the one they had before.
