Qalandars edge Buffaloes, Hurricanes clinch Super Over thriller

Durban Qalandars won by two runs

In a thrilling finish, the Johannesburg Buffaloes needed to score 20 runs off the last five balls of this Zim Afro T10 match against the Durban Qalandars at Harare Sports Club on Tuesday.

With Azmatullah Omarzai bowling that over, Mushfiqur Rahim looked on course to accomplishing the feat when he hit him for four successive fours, but he could manage only a single off the final delivery, and so the Qalandars sneaked home by two runs.

Tim Seifert had again done well for the Qalandars, opening with 46 off 20 balls, while Craig Ervine (30 not out off 14 balls) and Asif Ali (31 not out off only 10, with four sixes) gave the innings a dynamic ending.

The Buffaloes, chasing 121, were rescued from a poor start by Mohammad Hafeez (30 off 19) and Yusuf Pathan (32 off 15), which led up to the thrilling climax.

Match tied (Harare Hurricanes won the one-over eliminator)

A brilliant innings of 87 not out by Donovan Ferreira was just enough in the end to tie the Zim Afro T10 match between Harare Hurricanes and Cape Town Samp Army at Harare Sports Club on Tuesday, leading to a one-over eliminator.

The Samp Army were unable to take advantage of their Super Over, scoring only seven runs for one wicket, and the Hurricanes won that with eight runs without loss and without stress off five balls.

The Hurricanes scorecard shows a score of 115 for six, a remarkable charge after being 57 for six with 3.1 overs to go, of which Ferreira scored 87 and the only other batter to reach double figures – or even score five runs – was his last partner, Luke Jongwe, with 10 not out.

Ferreira’s great knock, the highest of the tournament thus far, came off only 33 balls and included eight sixes and six fours and took what appeared to be a disastrous team innings to a competitive total.

He finished the team innings with five successive sixes off Karim Janat.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz led the Samp Army’s reply with 56 off 26 balls (six sixes, two fours), and when he was out at 90 for two his team looked to be favourites for victory, with another 26 runs needed off 13 balls.

But apart from two sixes from Janat the remaining batters struggled for runs, and the last two deliveries of the innings brought the run-out of Sean Williams and a single.

Johannesburg Buffaloes – 97-4 in 10 overs (Yusuf Pathan 36*, Mohammad Hafeez 31, Mushfiqur Rahim 13*; Patrick Dooley 2/14, Faraz Akram 1/19)

Bulawayo Braves – 83-8 in 10 overs (Sikandar Raza 26, Thisara Perera 24, Timycen Maruma 13*; Blessing Muzarabani 2/15, Usman Shinwari 2/19, Junior Dala 2/20)

Johannesburg Buffaloes won by 14 runs

Good bowling from Blessing Muzarabani was an important factor in the final match of the day as his Johannesburg Buffaloes team managed to defend a score of 97 for four wickets.

The Buffaloes were in trouble at 45 for four, although 31 of these had been scored by their captain Mohammad Hafeez off 11 balls.

Yusuf Pathan scored 36 not out but his team had not produced their best batting.

When the Bulawayo Braves went in Muzarabani struck with a wicket in his first over, and it was soon three down for 16 before Sikandar Raza struck 26 off 13 balls.

But apart from Thisara Perera none of the other batters clicked, although Timycen Maruma scored 13 not out off the only six balls he was able to face.

Three wickets fell for one run in the last two overs, and the Buffaloes got home.
