Zim Afro T10 is part of Zimbabwe Cricket repositioning itself – Chairman Mukuhlani

ZC Chairman Tavengwa Mukhuhlani

Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlanis says that hosting of the Zim Cyber City Zim Afro T10 is part of the organisation repositioning itself.

Speaking to the media ahead of the tournament, Mukuhlani said:

As a sport and as an organisation we are in the process of repositioning ourselves in terms of cricket development. If you have noticed that in the last five years, we have been intentionally and strategically hosting almost each and every qualifier to up prop ourselves, and improve cricket. Part of that process involves building content and context in the form of tournaments and we think T10 is part of that process and it’s coming just ahead of our season and just after the [Cricket] World Cup Qualifier. It’s a process. It is part of a process Zimbabwe Cricket has engaged in to rebrand itself and reposition itself.

It means a lot for us., As you have heard, there are kids have been identified from grassroots. They will play in other formats, the T20, ODI and of course Test Cricket.

On infrastructure development including the floodlights

You will recall that the towers for the lights have been here for the longest time. And I am happy that we are getting to a place where we have to install actual the lights, and at least we have cricket being played day and night here. It’s a great opportunity for the fans. Imagine on a Friday, we start the game at seven. The fans can be at work and they can come for cricket. it also opens up other major events, you know the World Cup [which Zimbabwe is hosting in 2027), we will then be able to host other major events for the ICC. And I think we start with Harare Sports Club, we will be able to progress to Queens [Sports Club in Bulawayo]. Not every game has to be held in Harare. They need to be played all over the country in order to reach as many fans as we can. So yes. [the T10 Festival] is a great opportunity to improve and maintain our infrastructure as we host this tournament.

Mukuhlani said development will see kids from schools getting scholarships because of their cricket prowess.

The tournament runs from 20 to 29 July 2023.
