The South African government has extended the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit (ZEP) deadline for yet another six months.
Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said as much in a press statement overnight.
They will now expire on 31 December 2023. They were previously scheduled to run down at the end of this month.
Motsoaeledi says this gives an opportunity for those who have not regularised their stay by applying for a different visa todo so.
It means holders will not be subject to arrested for holding one and may enter or enter South Africa under current regulations.
This will provide temporary relief to the the estimated 180,000 who have scurrying to get a different visa with the bleak prospect of returning to Zimbabwe, something they were not looking forward to.
