These 5 classic movies from the late 90s and early 2000s just came to Showmax in May 2023

African streaming service Showmax has added new content to its offering and this includes some old movies which remain classics.

We are here to share movies that are classics and worth a rewatch. That is because some movies are like comfort food and are worth having another look.

And we are looking particularly at between 1999 and 2003. A lot happened there.

1. Deep Blue Sea (1999)

This sci-fi horror is great for its casting and surprise elements. Directed by Renny Harlin and starring Saffron Burrows, Thomas Jane, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Rapaport, and LL Cool J. Set in an isolated underwater facility, the film follows a team of scientists and their research on mako sharks to help fight Alzheimer’s. If that was a good thing, there would be no movie. And we all remember that shock early on. We were not ready.

2. Notting Hill (1999)

World famous actress meets a guy in a small town. This is the original era of the rom-coms. When we literally lived off them. The king of the genre that time Hugh Grant stars as the stumbling fella across Julia Roberts. You’ll watch it for that line…

3. Anger Management (2003)

Back before Adam Sandler started doing serious films, he used to scream a lot. Like a real lot. He stars opposite Jack Nicholson in this buddy comedy. The blurb says, Upon being sentenced to anger management therapy, Dave meets Dr Buddy Rydell, a quirky therapist, who uses peculiar tactics and invades Dave’s life in order to fix it. And you want to watch it for this scene….

4. Ocean’s 11

It is a remake of the 1960s series and spurned a franchise. Without this one, we got no progress. So Danny Ocean (George Clooney) is out 24 hours on parole and decides to rob his old nemesis. It is a lot more complicated than that, or may be it really isn’t. Either way, the chemistry of a great cast which includes Matt Damon, Andy García, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Elliott Gould, Bernie Mac, Qin Shaobo, and Carl Reiner make for great viewing. And you will want to see this..

5. Swordfish (2001)

Put Halle Berry in anything was the story of that time. Oh, and John Travolta. Use Don Cheadle and Hugh Jackman for some sauce and you have another heist movie. People really liked to rob people back then didn’t they. Just robbing and robbing some more. But it is a ridiculously entertaining watch with twists enough to keep you entertained. And this scene… Could he really type that fast?Stop it… It’s a movie.

Showmax is available for no extra charge if you are a DStv Premium customer. Otherwise, you pay half on other packages. Also available for as little as USD2.99 as standalone.
