11 things you need to know about the Zim Afro T10 League

The Zim Afro T10 cricket league has been announced.

There was a press conference and then an event, all on Friday in Harare.

So we are here to give you a lowdown on what this new tournament is about.

What T10 is

T10 is a cricket format in which teams play 10 overs each over 90 minutes. It started in Abu Dhabi and is run by T Ten Global Sports.

Tell me about the Zim Afro T10

After the original big daddy, Zimbabwe joins Sri Lanka as the only two full members to have the format played.

And the teams?

There will be six privately owned teams. They are teams with an African city name. These are Harare, Bulawayo, Cape Town, Durban, Windhoek and Nairobi. Cape Town has already been snapped up.. The owners will have permanent ownership of the teams, and will pay off the money over 10 years.\

How much does a team cost?

The purchase price is between USD2.5 million and USD15 million. It is dependent on the popularity of the city/team.

Where will the players come from?

Well an auction will take place for players. And key is that two players will be available for signing for each club outside the auction. After that, based on a tiered system used to get players to sign up for teams.

Yeah but are these local or international

The competition is open to international players. T Ten Global Sports Founder and Chairman Mr Nawab Shaji Ul Mulk said that over 500 international players have expressed interest. Only 60 0r 70 will be signed. He dropped names including current players and recently retired players.

And how about Zimbabwean players

Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director Givemore Makoni says there will be a quota system for the minimum number of local players who will be in each matchday squad.

Is Zimbabwe Cricket making money from this?

Zimbabwe Cricket have licensed this tournament for the first year at a fee of USD300,000.

Where will the matches take place?

They will be at Harare Sports Club. Zimbabwe Cricket says that since this is a new format, it is best to host it in one place first. In later years it will move to other towns.

When is it?

The exact dates have not been announced but the plan is for August 2023, we have been told.

Is there a women’s version?

Not at this point.

Who is the sponsor for the tournament?

Zim Cyber City.
