Zimbabwe win opening match of Netball World Cup Qualifier

Zimbabwe have picked up their first win as they make a bid to make back-to-back qualification for the Netball World Cup.

The Gems beat Botswana 49-41 in the first match of the ongoing Netball World Cup qualifiers in South Africa.

Zimbabwe led with tight margins in the first three quarters before pulling away for a healthy lead in the fourth.

Zimbabwe take on Namibia on Tuesday, Tanzania on Wednesday and then South Africa on Thursday.

The event is hosted by Netball South Africa,  in Pretoria where the hosts South Africa, as well as Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Kenya and Eswatini are participating.

The two top finishing teams from the event will then be invited by World Netball to compete at the Netball World Cup 2023 (NWC2023), this does not include South Africa who have already pre-qualified for the NWC2023 as hosts.

If South Africa finish in the top two, the third place team will be invited to compete at NWC2023.

All qualification matches are on DStv’s SuperSport.

Zimbabwe made their maiden qualification for the World Cup in 2019.
