The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency.

This represents its highest alert level as cases surge.

This level is cited defined as “an extraordinary event which is determined to constitute a public health risk to other states through the international spread of disease and to potentially require a coordinated international response”.

The most recent such alert level was the Covid-19 pandemic.

WHO does say it will not affect international travel or trade.

Monkeypox risk is moderate globally but high in Europe.

WHO said the outbreak was largely among men who have sex with men who had reported having sex recently with new or multiple partners.

Cases however been historically there where contact is made in endemic countries.

Zimbabwe has not recorded any cases of Monkeypox.
