Ex-president Compaoré gets life for the murder of Thomas Sankara

Thomas Sankara

A Burkinabe court has sentenced former President Blaise Compaoré to life imprisonment for the murder his predecessor, Thomas Sankara.

The verdict brings an end a trial which lasted six months. Sankara was assassinated during coup led by his friend and comrade-in-arms Compaoré on October 15, 1987.

All in all 37 were involved, including 12 government officials.

Compaoré sat on the files for 27 years as president until he was ousted in 2014 after which he fled to Cote d’Ivoire.

The murder of Sankara had been something of a taboo in Burkina Faso while Compaoré was in power.

He was being tried along with 13 others.

Sankara remains a very popular figure in pan-African spaces and was seen as an icon for the development of black people on the continent. His  supporters revere him for his integrity and selflessness. The military captain and anti-imperialist revolutionary led Burkina Faso for four years from 1983.

He would later be referred to as Africa’s Che Guevara.
