Too much Zoom use causing people to like themselves less

Zoom has become a massive use, more than ever, because of the pandemic.

People move from one meeting to the next, meeting colleagues all over the place, to keep companies afloat, while socially distanced.

It turns out that humans are beginning to like themselves, because of a new phenomenon called Zoom Dysmorphia.

You see, because humans tend to spend their lives with a largely outward looking perspective, the long hours looking at one’s own faces has resulted in people liking their own looks face. You know how you used to see a pimple, once every day and kept in mind fixing it? When you walked away from the mirror, you forgot about it. Now imagine looking it all day, and also beginning to see aspects of yourself that you do not like.

According to MedPage Shadi Kourosh, MD, MPH, of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.  and her associates surveyed 134 board-certified dermatologists and found that 56.7% had seen a rise in cosmetic consultations while in the midst of a global pandemic. In 86% of cases, patients specifically cited video conferencing as the reason for cosmetic consultation.

One could say, well take off the camera then. Well, for some, they feel that they will not come across as engaging as those who do not mind having it on. Add to that, the fact that the cameras either add or reduce a bit of weight. That also means that image seen is often distorted.

This has resulted in, at least the global north, an increase in how many people are resorting to cosmetic surgery.

This a brand new phenomenon, really, so much is not known about it at present. That said, there is enough information for people to worry, especially as some countries fold back into lockdowns.
