British-Zimbabwean Regé-Jean Page was only ever contracted for one season of the hit Netflix TV series Bridgerton, he has revealed.

This comes after a massive uproar as the series announced the heartthrob would not be returning for his role as the Duke.

Page, who played Simon Hastings The Duke of Hastings told Variety that he never planned on returning for the second season and that the series as it as pitched to him was a one-season one. So, a beginning, middle and end.

Fans of the show had already screamed out quite vociferously that they would boycott the second season of Bridgerton.

In the current adaptation of the Julia Quinn books, you can see how it would be impossible for him to take part. Each book is a separate love story and that of the Duke and Dutchess is done and dusted. They are sorted. After all, romance as a genre tends to leave things neatly packed, tidy and feeling goodly.

The new season will follow Lord Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan Bailey, as he attempts to find a wife. Simone Ashley has been cast as his love interest, Kate Sharma.
