LOGAN CUP: Rhinos, Rocks dominate 4th round opening day

Logan Cup action returned on Wednesday with the fourth round of action in Zimbabwe’s premier domestic cricket tournament.

Rhinos yet to bat

Mountaineers won the toss and decided to bat against Rhinos at Harare Sports Club.

Rhinos were boosted by the return of international star Brendan Taylor.

Rhinos made he early breakthrough when Baxon Gopito, Tafara Chingwara taking the wicket.

Wickets fell consistently the other end while Joylord Gumbie batted soldiered on. He was unfortunate to go out when Kudzai Sauramba attempted to hit one past Chingwara only for the grounder hit the bowler’s hand on its way into crashing into the stumps on the non-striker’s end. Gumbie was out of his crease and he had to walk for 62.

Mountaineers were 114 for the loss of four wickets.

Wickets fell regularly until a 72-run partnership between Victor Nyauchi and Shingi Masakadza. The latter made the most of the runs, scoring 77.

When bad light stopped play, Nyauchi was unbeaten on 17 and Tinashe Muchawaya, 12.

Play resumes at 9.30am on Thursday due to lost overs.

Eagles won he toss in their match against Southern Rocks at Old Hararians.

Eagles gave a debut to young under-19 World Cup star Tadiwanashe Nyangani on what was a difficult day for them with the bat.

Kudzai Maunze was the main resistance though, early on in an 85-run partnership with Tinashe Kamunhukamwe. Maunze departed, the first of Tendai Chisoro’s victims, going for 51. Kamunhukamwe was out two overs later to Innocent Kaia for 29.

The rest of the innings only had Brad Evans’s 38 and Oskar Kolk’s 35 to talk about with only Tino Mutombodzi making double figures with 11.

Eagles were bowled out for 193 in 61 overs.

Rocks started solidly but the opening partnership only lasted 38 runs as Innocent Kaia departed for 25 to Honest Ziwira.

At the end of day, stopped by bad light, 18.3 overs into the Rocks innings, Brian Mudzinganyama was on 30 and Gabriel Jaya, 6.

Play resumes at 9.30am on Thursday due to lost overs.
