Zimbabwe president Emmerson Mnangagwa has said his administration is talking to clubs to work on resumption of local club football.
Two high-profile meetings with the country’s traditional giants Dynamos and Highlanders were publicised recently. They took place at the State Houses in Harare and Bulawayo respectfully.
Now Mnangagwa says he is looking beyond the safe return of players but that of fans as well.
I’ve been speaking to football clubs across Zimbabwe, including Dynamos and Highlanders, to see how we can safely get players back on the pitch and fans in the stadiums.
The statement comes as Zimbabwe’s Sports and Recreation Commission has said it could open up high risk sports such as football as early as this week.
There have been no timelines for when fans can return to stadiums. That could be a while off given that social gatherings at present are very limited. The government will probably need to gave achieved a huge chunk of its vaccination target before opening the gates to fans.
