ZBC Power FM launches Chimurenga Music Competition with car, cash up for grabs

ZBC’s Power FM on Monday launched a Chimurenga Music Competition.

The competition will see artists provide entries for remixes, refixes and other such interpretation of liberation struggle songs. So looking at renditions of such music as RnB, hip hop or Zim dancehall.

And up for grabs are

  1. 1st prize, a car, USD2,500 cash and a recording contract
  2. 2nd prize, a car and USD1,000
  3. 3rd prize is USD500

The competition is in partnership with the Institute African Knowledge (Instak) whose CEO Kwame Muzawazi stressed the importance of liberation struggle songs being reimagined to bring young people into the conversation about the history of their country.

Guest of honour Monica Mutsvangwa, who is the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting services applauded the initiative, saying, “The opportunity presented to our youths to remix and recreate the Chimurenga songs and music is a very noble and exciting competition which should be a motivation for our youths to write their own history and be remembered as the creator of a winning liberation song – long after the actual war.

“The Institute of African Liberation is commended for initiating this competition and giving our youths an opportunity to be part of history making Zimbabwean musicians who date back to the actual liberation war,” she added.

ZBC Acting CEO Helliate Rushwaya stressed the importance of including youth, as they were guarantors of the future of Zimbabwe.

“I can also confidently declare to you today that if we neglect the young people, we will indeed perish as a nation,” Rushwaya said, adding, “Young people are the guarantors of our future and they need to start being custodians of our heritage during the time of their youth hence the need to focus on them to revive our Chimurenga spirit.”

The event at ZBC’s Pockets Hill Studios in Harare was also attended by board members of the corporation, Power FM personalities, members of the media as well artists such as Freeman, Trevor Dongo, Stunner, Madiz, Mel B and Bryan K to name a few.

The competition has already started and will admit entries until 23 November 2020.
