PREVIEW: Zimbabwe will need to be up for it against a primed Pakistan

It is the first time the Zimbabweans will be involved in international cricket since the test series against Sri Lanka in January/February.

While they have had a long time in camp after government permission under strict Covid-19 guidelines, it is the response in the middle that they have missed. The two matches some of them will have been able to play in the inaugural National Premier League will be of some comfort but that will be nothing compared to their hosts.

They tasted international cricket with a tour of England in August. Some of their players then got involved in the T20 Blast. The domestic season got into full swing and so Pakistan will get into thsis with less rust.

Zimbabwe captain Chamu Chibhabha impressed on the media the eagerness to play as part of the drive for his charges. And that is where the Southern African nation will have to find their inspiration.

Long derided, Zimbabwe are not expected to compete in this, never mind win the match. The last time Pakistan visited, they won all matches. But that was a Zimbabwe in turmoil with many of their senior players opting out over differences with the board.

What this group of players will need to show their hunger for performance at the high table. Zimbabwe will need to show how much they have missed the game and an eagerness to get moving in an upward trajectory.

With only this series then domestic cricket until next year, at this level, this is the chance to impress, to nag the backs of selectors’ minds.

And when the bowlers, batsmen and fielders cross the line tomorrow, they will need to be up for it.
