Senegal’s Wade Admits Defeat

State television in Senegal says President Abdoulaye Wade has conceded defeat to his rival Macky Sall.

RTS said Wade had called opposition candidate Macky Sall at 9:30 p.m. (2130 GMT) Sunday to congratulate him on his victory after partial results showed Sall trouncing the 85-year-old president at many polling stations.

Wade had attempted to to get a third term, which sparked widespread riots. Sall’s supporters were said to be celebrating on the streets.

Sall is Wade’s former protege.

Wade’s concession gives a chance for a  peaceful transition as any resistance from the veteran may have resulted in violence.
