Hybrid events on the rise as Chinhoyi University of Technology introduces virtual graduation ceremony

As the world opens up a little bit, organisers of events have started pushing towards a hybrid version of events.

Hybrid is when someone people are in location and other attendees do so from their remote location.

And the latest is the Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) which will see selected graduands invited to attend the ceremony in its traditional format, in person.

The rest will graduate from their remote locations at home in an event to streamed on the CUT Facebook page and ZTV.

When they have been used before, it has been to amplify the attendance available for delegates. This is when attendees can’t or won’t travel for health issues, when they can’t because of budget or in the other case, the limitations of venue capacity.

So in principle they are not a new idea but the graduation component is a bit interesting. That said, US music and film awards do sometimes have winners record a video for their thank you speech so there is precedence.

What will be a shame for many is the celebration with mates after being capped. And the capping itself is an event.

That said, one can have a beer while waiting to get capped. In effect, one can be at the pub and get capped while there. So, silver lining, yeah?

CUT’s event is on 2 October 2020.
