RBZ imposes ‘temporary’ limits on Zipit transactions

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Financial Intelligence Unit has imposed temporary limits on Zipit transactions.

Daily limits go down to ZWL20,000 per day from ZWL100,000.

The monthly limit has been reduced to ZWL100,000. It previously had no limits.

The Unit says it has come to this because very few Zimbabweans earn more than ZWL100,000 per day and those who do have other payment options available.

The Unit adds that the lack of caps was leading to trading in forex rampantly. That meant moving ZWL3million per month and if one has multiple accounts, even more.

How temporary this is, remains unclear because a temporary reduction in individual transactions on the EcoCash mobile platform was announced and remains in place.

Zipit (ZIMSWITCH Instant Payment Interchange Technology) is a platform that enables instant inter-bank funds transfers between ZIMSWITCH member institutions

The move comes at a time when the central bank is moving fast to bring a rampant exchange rate under control.
