Premier League can return from 1 June – govt

The Premier League can return to action from 1 June, the British government has said.

Football in the world’s most popular league has been shut down since the Covid-19 pandemic ravaged the shores killing 30,000 people.

The clubs in the league have committed to finishing the league in one way, shape or form with plans around matches behind closed doors and in neutral grounds. The league had targeted a 12 June return.

The resumption of football will see Liverpool two wins away from a title their first Premier League title.

For Zimbabweans it will be a chance to see Marvelous Nakamba back in action again with his relegation-threatened Aston Villa.

Of the big five only, France shut down its league prematurely. Germany’s Bundesliga returns on 16 May and Spain’s La Liga on 12 June. Italy’s Serie A has not indicated when it will return to the pitch.
