Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak dies

The man who ruled Egypt for almost 30 years until he was removed in the height of Arab Spring, Hosni Mubarak has died.

Mubarak was the country’s fourth president when he came into power in 1981. He was deposed in 2011 and jailed on charges arising before he was freed in 2017.

A military man whose heroics as a pilot invited national praise, he had a harsh stance on security that enabled him to keep peace with Israel. Mubarak also maintained Egypt a strong US ally.

His rule was also characterised by corruption, police brutality, political repression and economic problems.

He was 91.
