Kusal Mendis’s unbeaten 116 was the bedrock of Sri Lanka batting to a draw in the second and final test against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club.
After Zimbabwe faced one ball for skipper Sean Williams to get to his century with a maximum the islanders went in with a plan chasing 360 after the hosts had declared on 247/7.
When Zimbabwe got the breakthrough with Sri Lanka on 26, the wicket of captain Dimuth Karunaratne, taken by Carl Mumba it looked like stuff of wet dreams was unloading.
The tourists showed their pedigree, a second-wicket partnership between Oshada Fernando and Mendis building it all up only for the former to fall just after lunch 47. Sikandar Raza picked up that wicket.
Angelo Matthews did not stick around much and was next gone for 13.
But it was always going to be too much and with 10 overs to go, the two teams shook hands and called it a day.
The draw means Sri Lanka take the series 1-0.
For Zimbabwe, they will be happy to have competed and will look for brighter moments going forward.
