It looks as if the cure for the common cold is in sight.
Researchers at Stanford University and the University of California-San Francisco found that the best way to deal with the cold and other viral diseases was to disable a single protein in our souls.
Now, because colds are caused by Rhiniovirus which is prone to excesses in mutation, the idea is to create an environment in our bodies that viruses just wouldn’t fancy.
The answer? Gene-editing. A couple of viruses could not replicate themselves absent enzyme SETD3.
So with genetically modified mice unable to replicate or host the virus, they became immune to to viruses the common cold. Others also inhibited were asthma, encephalitis and polio.
And in case you’re wondering, the mice lived normal lives without SETD3.
