The proportion of black South Africans getting divorced has now surpassed that of whites.
The 2010 Statistics SA Marriages and Divorces report showed that blacks accounted for 35.5% of divorces in 2010 and whites 30.5%.
To illustrate the dramatic change, in 2001 43.2% of all divorces were white couples. Blacks accounted for 23.1%.
As the country becomes more liberal it appears that marriages are coming under pressure. Marriages are no longer as sacred and one could argue that certain value systems are getting eroded.
With the world opening, especially when it comes to social networks many people are opening themselves up to options that they do not necessarily need.
But then again, it could mean that access to divorce for the masses is becoming easier now for the masses. If we are to use demographics, there are more black people than whites in South Africa so the number is not as dramatic as some would like to imagine it is.
Ah well…
