High Court tells St John’s student to shave his beard

Zimbabwe’s High Court sitting in Harare has thrown out an application by Mohammed Ismail whose son was barred from attending lessons at St John’s College for keeping a beard.

Ismail argued that his son kept a beard for religious reasons.

Judge Alphus Chitakunye however said the student in question had to abide by the school’s code of conduct. He said he is ‘of the view that it is for the pupil to conform to school regulations and not to school regulations to conform to individual pupil’s belief and standards no matter how dearly one holds to such beliefs’.

It is not clear if the Ismail will take the case to the Constitutional Court or not.
