Watchful Zimbabwe keep first test on knife-edge

Zimbabwe endured some tight spin bowling for long periods as they 236-5 made on the first day of their first test against Bangladesh on Saturday at Syllet.

After winning the toss, Zimbabwe elected to bat on a wicket that is at its best early on.

Brian Chari was chosen to open while debuts were handed to Wellington Masakadza and Brandon Mavuta.

Chari was bowled early for 13 by Taijul Islam playing across the line, a terrible shot by any stretch of the imagination.

Brendan Taylor looked busy but he fell to a brilliant catch at short leg for 9.

Captain Hamilton Masakadza was looking good before Abu Jayed trapped him leg before for 52. At that point he was never in danger.

Sikandar Raza then joined Sean Williams and the pair were again, comfortable but the partnership was broken on 44. Raza departed for 19, the first victim in test cricket for Nazmul Islam.

Williams looked like he was stealing a march on a century, but Mahmudullah got him for 88.

Regis Chakabva joined Peter Moor and the pair were aggressive and overnight will be on 20 and 37 respectively.

419 dot balls were faced by Zimbabwe. That is 69 of the 91 overs bowled were dot balls.

That said, Zimbabwe will have a shot at the magical 300 mark on a pitch that will deteriorate.

Play resumes at 6.00am Zimbabwe time and live pictures are available on SuperSport.
