Walter Mzembi reveals battle with cancer

Former Zimbabwe minister Walter Mzembi has revealed that he has stomach cancer.

Mzembi revealed this to the courts on Tuesday where he was seeking the cancellation of his warrant of arrest.

He told Harare magistrate, Milton Serima, that he was hospitalised in an intensive care unit on the day he was supposed to appear in court. He has since been operated on in South Africa and will need to undergo regular checkups for a year.

Mzembi requested to have his passport released for the purposes of allowing him to travel to South Africa for the treatment.

Mzembi served for a long period as Tourism minister and for a short time in the Foreign Affairs capacity before a military intervention removed former president Robert Mugabe and those aligned to him.

He faces several fraud charges relating to his time as Tourism minister. He will be back in court in 31 August pending his trial.
