Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo Reigns!

Another game another record, the phenomenon that is Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be stopped. On Wednesday afternoon the engine didn’t even have to run to heat up. As early as the fourth minute Ronaldo had given the Portuguese the lead with a pinpoint header making him  the highest European national team goal scorer of all time with 85. We are not worthy to witness this greatness. That wasn’t the whole story though as Morocco put on a sterling performance to try and save their campaign. It’s a shame that Rui Patricio Portugal’s number one came to play as the newly confirmed Wolverhampton Wanders shot stopper put in another top shift to repel the North Africans. One save in particular caught the eye as he scooped Belhanda’s goal bound header away from goal when it looked certain to be heading in. The journey for Morocco ends here however as all that’s left to play for is pride. No shame in that!

No teeth, but Suarez still bites

El Pistolero marked his centenary appearance for Uruguay with the simplest of finishes to secure his side’s progress to the next round taking his total international tally to 52. The Barcelona hitman will however be disappointed not to have added more as the Saudi’s restored a lot of pride with a battling performance and could’ve had a goal of their own, in the 29th minute. Bahebri blazed over a golden opportunity which would’ve brought Saudi Arabia back into the game. The Saudi number one made a fine save late on in the game to deny Cavani and although their fate is now sealed some Saudi pride has been restored

Nuclear Costa

Diego Costa disarmed Iran as his rather fortuitous deflected effort found the back of the net. The beleaguered Spaniards looked anything but world beaters however struggling to find a way past a highly organised Iranian outfit who put up a valiant effort and even had a goal chalked off for offside. Their would-be moment came in the 83rd minute as Amiri beat Pique with a playground piece of skill leaving the Barcelona defender looking rather silly. It was not to be however as the resultant cross was agonizingly headed over the bar by Mehdi. Still all to play for in the final group games as Iran could still qualify if they beat Portugal and Morocco beat Spain.
