AUDIO: After day 1, Zim Cricket Convener of Selectors speaks on missing local players and T20I preps

Zimbabwe Cricket Convener of Selectors Walter Chawaguta speaks exclusively to 3-mob.com  at the end of day one of a T20 tri-series involving two Zimbabwean sides and Kenya.

The little tournament is in preparation for T20 international tri-series involving Zimbabwe, Australia and Pakistan next month in Harare.

Two matches were played on Tuesday, involving the Board XI and Chairman’s XI. The Board XI played two matches losing both. The bright light for them was a 60 by former captain by Elton Chigumbura.

It is good to see him coming back and if you see, he paced his innings.

Chawaguta also spoke of the lack of experience in the shortest format of the game which he said, along with the slow pace of the pitch contributed to low scores on the ground.

In the second match Tarisai Musakanda starred for the Chairman’s XI with a 48 to chase down the Board XI’s score.

The matches which were being watched by new interim coach Lalchand Rajput, saw some some senior players missing in action. Chawaguta attributed it to some of them playing club cricket and in England. He added that a few others were coming from injury and could not take part. As for those who were local? Chawaguta was coy:

They have spoken to their managers and we are yet to find out why they did not play today.

There have been rumours that some players have not made themselves available for the little tournament but noone was willing to confirm this for us.
