There is a clever way of using solar lighting that could solve Africa lighting problems. This solar light design requires neither a solar panel nor a light bulb, in fact, all it requires is the sun and a two litter’s water bottle. Best of all is costs nothing.
The solar bottle uses refraction of sunlight to light a dark room. If you drilled a hole in your ceiling light would drop directly through the opening in a straight line casting a shadow on the ground in the shape of the hole. By placing a bottle filled with water into the hole, the light is refracted by the water and emitted at 360 degrees like a light bulb.
The down side is that the bulb only works during the day or where it can refract light. I have been into some huts in my village that are in serious need of lighting even during the day. With plenty of sunshine in Africa this should not be the case.

One wonders why our leaders dont spend time and resources trying to look for cheap solutions to people’s living conditions than using old expensive ideas. Then again maybe its time people found their own solutions to their problems.
From the little science I did in school I went on ahead to try and make my own bottle bulb, not that I doubted it in the first place.
I think it went on pretty well bearing in mind I did not follow the instructions properly and substituted the ingredients with home cleaning products that have little clorine. I also did not have the correct props natural sunlight and the bottle was lying on its side instead of being at an angle in an upright position. Furthermore (I was under my bedroom table using my bedroom lamp.)
Despite all the problems the before and after results were pretty impressive.
