Captain Chipo Mugeri, Zimbabwe women won the first of three one day internationals against Ireland by seven wickets at Country Club in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Mugeri carefully curated 64 off 82 balls, much of it in a 93-run partnership with Mordester Mupachikwa (40) was the basis of an efficient chasing down of a revised target of 140.
This was 17 overs had been lost due to rain and the 174 was revised down via the Duckworth/Lewis rule.
That total of 173/7 by Ireland was largely due to Shauna Kavanagh 79 who stood tall as wickets fell around her. Only captain Mary Waldron (22) and Amy Kenealy (20) had significant scores although Cara Murray’s debut came yielded 14 runs.
Patience Marange was the pick of Zimbabwe’s bowlers with 2-21 off 20 overs. Ireland will be disappointed with the fact that three of their seven dismissals were via run-outs.
