New Mzansi Magic reality show ‘Uthando Nes’thembu’ demystifies polygamy

Thursday 18 May introduced us to businessman Musa Mseleku and his four wives, Mamkhulu (First Wife), Mayeni (Second Wife), Makhumalo (Third Wife), and Mangwabe (Fourth Wife) on the new reality show Uthando Nes’thembu.

The new reality show debuted on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) on Thursday night and from early reactions seems as if it is an instant hit.

Look, polygamy as a thing is widely accepted in most African cultures and current South African president Jacob Zuma is a polygamist.

The show does deal with some misconceptions as the family concerned lays bare its successes and stresses in such a structure. Key is Musa’s honesty about polygamy and how he makes it work. He did admit that being a polygamist is difficult as it requires a man to be able to provide for all his wives and children.

He currently has 10 kids and he wants another 10.

It is not for everyone but the show does help many understand the complexities around relationships, really.
