Highlanders-Dynamos match abandoned after crowd trouble

A wrong decision by a referee’s assistant to allow a clear offside goal to stand in the match between Highlanders and Dynamos resulted in crowd trouble and the match being called off at Barbourfields Stadium.

A full stadium had appeared to watch the match traditionally called the Battle of Zimbabwe.

Until the match was called off, it was a highly entertaining match with both teams showing a lot of attacking intent.

And when Bosso captain Rahman Kutsanzira scored with beauty to put the hosts ahead we had a good game on our hands.

Then on the 42nd minute, Dynamos’s Epoupa in an offside position latched onto a pass that rebounded off Bosso player and slotted it into the net.

The flag did not go up, as it should have as indicated in the graphic below:

Highlanders hooligans then started throwing missiles at that far side assistant and would not let the match resume. Bosso players, coaches, stewards and other staff attempted to quieten the fans but after an hour with no luck the match was abandoned.

Watch the goal that caused the controversy below, as captured by Chronicle reporter Dingi Ntuli:

With the match abandoned after a disciplinary hearing, the match will probably be forfeited 3-0 in favour of Dynamos.

As for the assistant referee, unlike the Premier League in the UK, we do not expect any consequences for the poor decision.
