For the lazy bones here is an excuse not to do it.
Research from a Yale University study says the physical stress of long distance running can cause short-term kidney injury.
Although the organs recover after 2 days it raises questions about the long-term effect of marathon running.
Researchers found that 82 percent of runners in 42-kilometre 2015 Hartford Marathon had injuries to their kidneys. They had Stage 1 Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) which is a condition in which the kidneys fail to filter waste from the blood.
Lead researcher professor of medicine Chirag Parikh Parikh:
The kidney responds to the physical stress of marathon running as if it’s injured, in a way that’s similar to what happens in hospitalised patients when the kidney is affected by medical and surgical complications
Pretty deep.
The theory is that this is caused by the rise in core body temperature, dehydration, or decreased blood flow to the kidneys during the marathon.
The study has been published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
Zimbabwe has very little in the way of stats on kidney injuries.
