Zimbabwe top order goes missing again in latest loss

It is beginnin to sound like something of a broken record after Zimbabwe’s top order went AWOL as Sri Lanka registered a massive 8 wicket win with 153 balls remaining the first match of the Blue Mountain Achilleaon Cup triangular series at Harare Sports Club on Monday.

Coach Heath Streak minced no words as he said failing batsmen were now ‘taking their own livelihoods in their own hands’.

The guys have got to take responsibility as well. Some of these guys have had lots of opportunities. If they don’t start performing we are going to have look at other people who are putting their hand up and give them a chance.

Bar maybe [Brian] Chari nobody got a delivery they couldn’t play.

Zimbabwe went from 13-1 to 14-3 in not time. Bar a 55-run partnership between captain Graeme Cremer (31 and Peter Moor (47) there was nothing to talk about as Zimbabwe were bundled out for 154 on green pitch.

The ball was there to be hit and lower batsmen Donald Tiripano and Tinashe Panyangara showed it with some positive aggressive cricket.

Panyangara with the ball in hand spoilt a dream start when his delivery found an edge off Dhannjaya de Silva into Moor’s gloves only for it to be ruled illegal after he had stepped over the line.

De Silva then imposed himself on the Chevrons carrying the bat with an unbeaten 78.  De Silva was surprised by how Zimbabwe capitulated:

Some guys threw wickets away. They could have achieved 200 or 22o to bring themselves back into the game.

Sri Lanka completed the win getting 155 for the loss of  Kusal Perera (21)  and Niroshan Dickwella (41) to earn a bonus point comfortably.

They now take on West Indies on Wednesday before the series moves to Bulawayo.
