Captain Graeme Cremer notched up his first test hundred as he guided his side safely past the follow on at Harare Sports Club.
Zimbabwe went into day 3 at 88 for the loss of one wicket and Tino Mawoyo and Hamilton Masakadza were quickly removed.
Sean Williams, Craig Ervine and Malcolm Waller gave up their wickets at regular intervals leaving Zimbabwe looking perilously in danger at 139-6.
Peter Moor and Graeme Cremer then put a 132-rn partnership before the latter fell to a ball that got big on him from Lahiru Kumara, top-edged a nasty one caught by Dilruwan Perera.
Pace bowler Donald Tiripano joined the captain and showed he was very capable with bat falling four short of his half century to Kusal Mendis making it the maiden first class cricket wicket for the Sri Lankan youngster.
The chance for Cremer (Creamora as his fans call him) to get his three figures looked like it was disappearing when Carl Mumba was removed and Chris Mpofu came on with the captain on 99.
Said Cremer:
I thought it was more than one ball left in the over but when I knew there was one I was happy. Chris said he would get a long stride in and stay in.
Cremer clipped it to leg and his big moment came.
Mpofu was out bowled soon after and Zimbabwe were dismissed for 373, 164 runs behind Sri Lanka. It didn’t matter for the fans.
Sri Lanka got three overs in and will resume tomorrow on 5-0.
Quick fun fact: Cremer’s hundred is the 19th by a Zimbabwean batsman at Harare Sports Club.
