The culture of revenge porn has become cancerous in Zimbabwean society to an extent that it is viewed not on the basis of the impact it has on the victim but compared to ones that have fallen before.
So abject has the collective soul of our society that we have personalities engaging in incendiary behaviour, making callous remarks about women’s parts, even creating derogatory names for them. In some instances it has even involved personalities who themselves have been victims of leaked videos.
The thing about it all, is all of us sit on the outside when it comes to matters of this nature. Whatever reaction we have it can never be the same as that of the victim, in spite we think of her. If she were a porn star who voluntarily revealed her privates to the rest of the world then that would be different. This is a woman, who woke up one day, probably thought it would be a lovely day, had a cup of coffee, kissed her mother before she went to work but by the end of the day had a soul tossed into a world dark and full of terrors.
The terrors are not just that her pictures or videos are out. It is how society will judge her and strip her of any dignity she had. Society threatens the little self-worth she had, the thing she called her own.
And then of course the Twitter trolls and WhatsApp groups have a go with rancid remarks start.
In some instances she picks herself up and finds a way to move on. In other cases, she can’t find a way out of the maze and takes her own life.
To everyone else she is a subject of scorn, ridicule or pity. For her, it’s real life.
Katswe Sisterhood has quite rightly called on the parliament of Zimbabwe to classify revenge porn as a criminal offence.
And we fully endorse this petition.
Revenge porn is the distribution of any explicit material without the consent of the individual portrayed.
