Latest match-fixing scandal not surprising

A shocking story made the news this week when the Zimbabwe Football Association said it suspended Executive Committee member Edzai Kasinauyo over match-fixing allegations.

The association says it has affidavits, audio recordings and other evidence fingering the former Warriors player with an attempt to manipulate results in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying ties against Swaziland.

A shocker as it might seem we don’t find it all surprising that this has happened.

The reason? Well when Zifa decided to forgive everyone who had been sanctioned because of Asiagate no measures were announced to tackle match-fixing. Sure Kasinauyo has been caught but what else is being done to deal with issues of match-fixing in Zimbabwe. The fact that we have been tainted by Asiagate means there is a problem whether one feels those accused before were not treated fairly or not. The fact that former CEO, Henrietta Rushwaya who had her sanctions lifted recently has her name in the same pot, is rather, well you know, sad.

So it is not surprising for us that this happened. While fully aware that these are currently allegations as we are not privy to the evidence, if true, it means that conversation on match-fixing in Zimbabwean sport (and not just football) needs to be ramped up.

We are glad the Confederation of African Football has said it is taking the latest allegations seriously and will be coming down hard on any found guilty.

The real issue though is, how do we protect the game?
