The final day of SA Menswear Week on 6 February 2016 and it was the culmination of a statement on what men’s fashion should be saying and where it is going.
The final day was defined by two things, political statement and looking dapper.
And dapper isn’t just the clothes. When you look at Chu Suwannapah’s winter range, an interesting cold war inspired eastern military wear married to deeply moisturised groomed clean cuts from the models, it makes perfect sense. Chu’s range was strong on protest but what MAC Cosmetics did with it, to compliment a radical statement, through the eyes of young and inspired.
Then we had of course the in-you-face finale with Magents. Protest paint sculptured, groomed chocolate-bronze bodies made for powerful messaging. It is all very well, rocking an urban street wear and look like you have to been pulled butt-first out of a hedge. Key on this is image messaging that look, hyper-masculine, practical trendy.
M.A.C. Cosmetics South Africa Senior Resident Artist Keagan Cafun explains:
The youthful look allows you to feel brand new. So if you have come home late and needed to look fresh for fthe morning we [MAC] have a way of making you feel brand new.
Impressing us on the final day was the fashion from the Nigerian Designers’ showcase (Orange Culture, Tokyo James and Kola Kuddus) especially with their finishing.
Fashion is fantastic. The whole sch-bang and we can’t wait to see more Zimbabwean designers looking at this. And guys, remember, grooming is key.
There are things we would never do but yeah, you could see a few things that are practical and just work.
MAC Cosmetics has a shop at Sam Levy’s Village in Harare.
