CRICKET: Disgraceful Zimbabwe Lose Home Series To Afghanistan… Yes… It Happened

A disgrace. Sub-standard, weird, mediocre, not even good enough to be second-rate. An insult to the fans.

Zimbabwe lost a home one-day series to Afghanistan after capitulating to 172 all out at Queens Sports Club to lose by 172 runs.

Afghanistan clinch the series 3-2.

Of those 172 runs. 102 were made by Sean Williams.

But this is a series loss against Afghanistan. Yes. Afghanistan. We have players like captain Elton Chigumbura who no longer should simply have pressure put on him to justify his position as captain but his inclusion in the side at all.

The team before complained about the lack of games but there is no legislating for the poor performances by the team in this series.

Sure there were lights like Sikandar Raza who performed consistently with ball, bat and in the field. Chaps like Craig Ervine went missing in this series. So did Chamu Chibhabha. It is all very well to say they dominated patches of this season but it should be impossible for one to even countenance the thought of losing to Afghanistan.

No disrespect to the visitors who showed the sort of commitment that the Zimbabwean lot abdicated from. They came to Zimbabwe and made history. They may not have the experience but the desire is there and it is matched in by their performance on the field and not some perfunctory statement that has to be made because it is there to be made.

Congratulations to them and they deserve the win. They simply wanted it more than the Chevrons.

The thing that makes it all galling is that, Zimbabwe lost this because individuals played poorly. Leadership disappeared or was present in patches thanks to some who gave it a fight at times.

They asked for more games promising an improvement. They got those. We thought there was something there after the Ireland innings but alas, a dummy.

What does this mean?

No idea. What do you say to something this disgraceful.
