Zimbabwean songstress Ammara Brown has spoken for the first time about the loss of her sister Chiedza who tragically took her own life on last weekend.
Ammara spoke of the ‘gut wrenching’ and ‘inexplicable pain in [her] womb’ when she heard the news, Add to that ‘uncontrollable cries’, ‘painful state of hysteria’ and an inability to speak for hours.
Ammara shared memories of her time with Chiedza from the time she was a child, how she was a premature baby and treated so differently by her dad to when she performed backstage Next Lifetime at ZIFF 2011.
Then to Chiedza’s mother Chiwoniso’s funeral where they composed Go Well, playing on their nyungas until their nails broke.
Speaking to her, she was always putting on a brave smile, but perhaps losing both parents was too much..perhaps being away from home was too much..I am struggling to understand. Acceptance is a mountain of a task for me at this point and I am at a great loss for comfort… Maybe when she gets home I will feel the beginning of peace.
Above and beyond losing a young mbira queen, we have lost an angelic soul. No laugh can replace hers, and her sweet voice is still echoing in my head.. I will remember her for her true innocence, and her warm spirit. I will miss my mbira partner but most of all I will miss my baby sister..we will miss our baby girl…
When I found the strength to pray I asked The Almighty to forgive her and guide her soul to Dad and Chi. We will meet again some day, my baby girl. Go well little sis..Go well.. I will love you forever
Our hearts go out to the family. All of them. Noone should have to post a message mourning the loss of 15 year-old sibling especially in such a way.
